Curriculum

In PK4 we recognize the importance of instilling a love for learning.  Our program is a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated learning activities.

Teachers and students construct classroom experiences together.  Teachers facilitate learning and challenge children to problem solve, analyze, and build knowledge.  The children work and play in both large and small groups to develop self-confidence and social skills. God’s love and the Gospel are a part of every day in PK4 as we teach, model, and reinforce respect, kindness, and cooperation within a community of learners.

Religion
Jesus is a part of everything we do in PK4. We have “Jesus Time” every day. Through a study of attributes the children learn Bible stories and every day living concepts and memorize Scripture in spoken word and song. In addition to our religious instruction time, everything from the songs we sing, our discipline philosophy and prayer at snack time show Jesus to our students.

Language Arts
Our PK4 experience is language-rich.  Teachers read stories to their children daily and encourage them to make logical predictions while reinforcing oral language skills, as well as concepts of print and rhyme.  Through classroom discussion and research, children become authors and illustrators and share ideas.  They develop writing skills, letter/sound associations, sight word reading and awareness of word segmentation as a foundation for the next level of reading and writing.

Mathematics
Children develop readiness by exploring a wide array of hands-on math materials.  They identify and write numerals, develop estimating, graphing, voting and predicting skills.  Blocks, cubes, graphs, rulers, weights, scales and other everyday items are used as math tools.

Social Studies and Science
In social studies, teachers help students establish links between past experiences and new concepts.  Children develop an awareness of self, as well as an appreciation of individual differences at home and within the school community.
In science, through hands-on activities and field trips, children are introduced to the scientific process.  They begin to learn about and take responsibility for God’s creation and their community.

World Languages
Our curriculum includes exposure to Spanish in PK4.  Children recognize and repeat basic vocabulary through games, songs, rhymes, and recitations.

Art, Music, Dance
PK4 children participate in a variety of daily art activities to develop fine motor skills, creative thinking, and expressive potential.
Music and movement are also a part of every – day learning at PK4. Rhythm, pitch and counting are learned and reinforced throughout the year. Dancing and movement begins as lead – and - follow but develops as the children add their own dance ideas to songs and choreograph an instrumental piece in the spring.

Physical Education
Children participate in formal physical education classes and enjoy daily free play in outdoor and indoor play areas. A wide variety of equipment is used during gym class aiding in the learning of basic gross motor skills like balancing, striking, kicking and throwing.

Mrs. Ibeling

I received my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education from Concordia University Wisconsin in 2002 and accepted the call to teach Pre-K at St. Paul's after graduation.  I feel very blessed to be back at my home congregation - we truly are a family here at St. Paul's!
